What Should I Wear Today? – An Interview from BWC’s Women on Wealth
"Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman."- Coco Chanel
On International Women’s Day, I had the pleasure of being a guest at GoldenTree Asset Management’s Women’s Day celebration. During the event, financial and retail experts discussed the evolution and future of the retail industry. Goldman Sachs’ recent announcement allowing their workforce to transition to a more casual dress code; specifically described as “firm-wide flexible dress code” was one of the topics discussed and the most interesting for me. One of the panelists, a female vice president at Goldman Sachs, asked the question on every female’s mind; how do you dress more casual for work and rid your closet of your business formal pantsuits while still looking professional and polished? “What does that even mean?” were her exact words. Her sentiment echoed throughout the all-female audience and I really just wanted to know more and what this meant for the future of the financial industry as a whole.
My curiosity led me directly to the always impeccably dressed, owner of Flirt Boutique in Hamden, Meryl Henrici. She was gracious enough to sit down with me and let me in on some of her fashion secrets.
What are several staple/signature pieces every woman should have in their closet?
A black blazer is number one. It can be worn with just about anything...jeans, pants, a skirt or dress. These pieces will give a finished look to any ensemble. Next would be a black trouser, black pencil skirt, or black jeans with no rips. A classic white shirt is always on trend and a good tank top that is not too skimpy; one in black and one in white are a must. Tank tops are perfect when worn under a blazer.
With business casual comes the topic of wearing jeans in the workplace. If women do choose to wear jeans with the goal of maintaining a professional and polished look, what would you and what would you not pair the jeans with?
Blue jeans are great when worn properly - no rips for work! Paired with a white shirt & black blazer is an awesome look. A black kitten heel pump (pointed or almond shaped toe) or a flat sleek loafer make this a good look for work. A big No-No are tops that are too tight or too low!
What trends are in style right now for spring? And how can those trends translate to the workplace?
The wider leg pant, whether it’s a jean or trouser is a cool on-trend look this spring. This look is awesome when paired with a crop blazer. The colors of the season are hot pink, cobalt & coral. It’s always fun to add a pop of color to your outfit-a colorful tee shirt or sweater. Flowy florals are also on-trend. Pretty summer dresses and pretty floral tops are a beautiful look when paired with a jean or trouser.
How would you add accessories to an outfit in a professional work setting? Or should you stray away from accessories?
I love accessories! It gives an outfit attitude and shows off your personality. Colorful scarves or a simple strand of pearls worn with a nice white tee shirt can be the perfect addition to an outfit. A turquoise necklace or earring can give your outfit a summertime look. Whatever you choose an accessory defines what look you want to achieve.
For older women in the workplace, should they take a different approach to keeping up with the latest trends?
I am not big on putting women into an age category. It is more about your figure and mindset. Because you’re over 50, do not become frumpy!! Always use common sense. Work appropriate and age appropriate go hand in hand and follow the same rules.
As we all know in the corporate world, the day usually doesn’t end at 5 o’clock and often times you are going directly from work to a client dinner or event. How do you make that natural transition from day to evening?
Shoes are your most important accessory! They will literally change the entire look of your outfit. The easiest day-into-evening look is a change of shoes. A classic black suit worn with a flat shoe is good for business. Slip into a high heel sexy pump and you have a great dinner suit.
“Shoes transform your body language and attitude. They lift you physically and emotionally.”- Christian Louboutin
What is the fashion advice you live by?
Not too short, not too tight, not too low!
Have fun with fashion. Don't be afraid to try something new.
“Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.”-Ralph Lauren
